Grindr is cool if you know what I mean. Oooops I meant grinders are cool. Whether gay, straight, or anywhere in between you can use a grinder for all your dry herb needs.
A grinder is a tool used primarily when working with dry herbs to break down the composition of flower to create a grain-like texture.
In turn, you can use your freshly ground herbs to pack a bong, pipe, bake a cake, or roll a joint.
However, in order to get the most out of your grinder it is imperative to understand the difference between a 2-piece, 3-piece, and 4-piece grinder. Each type provides a different smoking experience because the degree in which the herb is ground and sifted creates a varied burn quality, flavor, and inhalation for users.
In order to understand the influence that a grinder has on the overall smoking experience, understanding each grinder type at its core will help inform your purchasing decisions.
A 2-piece grinder is the most rudimentary version of grinder on the market. It consists of two separate pieces with teeth, connected by a magnet to create a single chamber that is used to grind down the weed. Since there are no additional chambers it can be messy to remove the weed from the grinder. Unlike with a 3 and 4-piece grinder, a 2-piece one is slimmer, and easier to transport.
Most smokers won’t opt for a 2-piece grinder just because kief is not saved in the grinder since there are no additional chambers. However, 2-piece grinders make great travel companions, and users can easily take it on-the-go. One of the drawbacks is that you cannot control the fineness of your grind, making it possible to over grind because it doesn’t fall into a collection slot.
A 3-piece grinder is a step above a 2-piece grinder in terms of versatility, herb smoothness, and durability. Similar to the former, magnetic strips are typically used to hold all the components together and the first chamber is where the hemp is inserted and ground up. The second chamber is where the dry herb falls after it is ground up, eliminating the possibility of over grinding the flower.
Collecting your ground material is simple as it all culminates in the second chamber without sharp teeth or prongs getting in the way. This makes for a more refined grinding experience, however, there are still no chambers to hold the kief.
Kief originates from the hemp plant, and is derived from the trichomes on the bud containing high amounts of THC, CBD, and terpenes. It falls off the bud naturally during the grinding process and can be found in the third chamber of a 4-piece grinder. Also sometimes called pollen because of its dust-like appearance, kief is often collected and sprinkled on a bowl or put in or around a joint for an added punch.
4-piece grinders are my absolute favorite because they have all the components necessary for the ultimate grinding experience. In addition to having a chamber for kief, 4-piece grinders are typically thicker than your average 3 or 2-piece sets.
There are mini 4-piece grinders that you can take with you on-the-go, but can get messy if not properly screwed on tight enough. The biggest drawback is that they are more expensive than the other options, but totally worth it if you’re dedicated to the craft.
Besides your typical 2-piece, 3-piece, and 4-piece grinders made of metal there are a plethora of options out there for you to choose from including:
Customization is everything in the smoking industry, and getting what speaks to you is the most important thing. If you’re going to smoke, might as well enjoy and celebrate all the components of your self care process.
