Battery Care & Maintenance Guide

Battery Care & Maintenance Guide

Batteries are the core power supply for our vapes. They are critical to providing the power to continuously output vapor. Batteries need to be occasionally checked and maintained to ensure proper function and usability. Improperly stored and maintained batteries can be subject to failure, resulting in an inoperable battery in the best case or an exploding mod in the worst case scenario. Both options are unwanted and can lead to wasted money or in some cases, a trip to the emergency room. Thankfully, with advances in battery safety, most devices nowadays are equipped with state-of-the-art battery protection software and hardware.

Let’s find out what we can do to ensure the proper usage and care of batteries to prevent such outcomes, while preserving and prolonging the lifespan of your batteries.

Inspecting Your Batteries

Battery wraps must be inspected for any tears, rips, or missing coverage to prevent short circuits when installed in a mod. Exposed metal-on-metal contact between the battery and chassis of the mod can result in an unfortunate short circuit, essentially halting all use of the shorted battery. For example, the battery above has a torn wrap near the positive end of the battery which must be rewrapped or risk short-circuiting the battery.

Charging

Charging batteries does not seem like a big deal, but it plays a great role in maintaining the lifespan of a battery. Using the batteries until they are completely drained can be problematic as they may not be able to hold a charge. In addition, external batteries should only be charged through an external battery charger such as the Nitecore i2 Intelligent Charger. This ensures the proper method of charging is met for different compositions and types of batteries. Incorrect battery chargers may also overcharge your battery, increasing the chances of a failure or even causing the battery to vent, releasing superheated gasses and/or potentially exploding. External batteries CAN be charged via a microUSB port if offered on the mod, but they should be charged on an intelligent charger for better life expectancy and function. Integrated batteries can only be charged via USB port and have been optimized for such. Batteries should be charged to 40-50% before storing to ensure longer life expectancy.

Storage

Storing batteries can affect the performance of the battery. Dark places, dry, and away from sunlight is ideal, as they all play a role in affecting a battery’s function during storage. Power trickles out of batteries in prolonged storage, but they should be charged to about 40%-50% before storing. Keep them away from metallic items like keys, jewelry, or coins as the contact can cause them to short-circuit, prematurely ending the lifespan of the stored batteries. Excessive heat or temperature can result in serious accidents if not carefully monitored. Storing them correctly for on-the-go vaping is something that is overlooked, with many vapers simply throwing spare batteries into a book bag, pocket, or purse without any thoughts of what else is stored inside. This can be easily prevented with a storage case specifically designed for batteries as the production material is inert and will not interact negatively with the battery.
