If you want to get as close as possible to tasting nectar from the gods, you’ll need a nectar collector to experience the heavenly effects of concentrates. It’s a little Breaking Bad, Walter White–esque because you need a torch to heat the tip if you're going the traditional route. Electronic nectar collectors eliminate the need for a torch, but we will cover that a little later.
Once you get the hang of it, using a nectar collector is actually one of the easiest ways to enjoy concentrates.
Dabbing is a bit different from smoking traditional dry herb. The biggest difference comes down to potency and how the cannabis is consumed.
Smoking flower typically contains around 15–25% THC, and many cannabinoids are lost to combustion. Most people smoke dry herb using a bong, pipe, or joint.
Dabbing, on the other hand, is stronger and more flavorful, with concentrates often containing 60–90% THC. Because concentrates are more potent, they create a more immersive experience.
Concentrates can be consumed using several devices, including: dab rigs, e-rigs, nectar collectors (also called dab straws), and dab pens.
If you're transitioning from smoking flower to concentrates, a nectar collector is one of the easiest beginner tools to start with.
Before you start dabbing, gather the following materials:
Smoking from a nectar collector is simple, all you need to do is put your concentrate of choice into the honey pot (a glass or silicone dish) and assemble your parts. If your nectar collector has a water chamber, add a small amount of water. If not, you can skip this step.
Use a torch to heat the tip for about 45 seconds, and then let the tip cool for around 10 seconds. Lightly graze the heated tip to your concentrates and inhale through the mouthpiece. Refrain from dipping the heated tip into your dabs as you’ll just liquefy instead of vaporizing them.
If you’re using an electric nectar collector, the process is even easier. Simply turn on the device and allow it to heat up according to the instructions. Some electric models require clicking the button a few times to activate heating for multiple hits, so it’s always a good idea to check the manual.
Look at you, you’re basically a pro already.
If this is your first time dabbing, try it in a comfortable environment like your home or a friend’s house. Because concentrates are much stronger than flower, it may take a little time for your body to adjust to the higher THC levels.
Cleaning your nectar collector regularly keeps the flavor fresh and the device working properly. For most glass pieces, you’ll need: isopropyl alcohol, coarse salt, and a straw cleaner. Let the parts soak in alcohol, then use salt and a cleaner to scrub hard-to-reach areas.
Cleaning methods may vary depending on the material:
Electric nectar collectors:
Only soak the non-electrical components. Never get the electronic portion wet.
Titanium tips:
Avoid soaking. Instead, heat the tip with your torch and carefully burn off any residue.
Silicone dab straws:
Wash with soap and water, then place them in the freezer. Once frozen, the residue can be easily peeled off.
Glass nectar collectors are often the easiest to maintain because the cleaning process is similar to cleaning a bong or pipe.
Another reason nectar collectors are so popular is their portability.Traditional dab rigs can be bulky and require more setup. Nectar collectors, on the other hand, are compact, discreet, and easy to travel with, making them a convenient way to enjoy concentrates on the go.
The torch might be the only part that looks a little intense in public, but to each their own.
If you plan to smoke outside the house, you might prefer a dab pen, though they’re usually not quite as hard-hitting as a nectar collector. If you’re after a strong buzz while still keeping things portable, a nectar collector is a solid choice.
If you're shopping for your first dab straw, these are a few popular options beginners often choose:
There’s a wide range of prices for nectar collectors, and plenty of affordable options if you’re just testing the waters.
Torch it, inhale, and smoke and that’s it, you’ve got this. Enjoy the ride as you taste the nectar of the gods.
