You may be wondering how nicotine pouches differ from your typical vape. After all, they both provide that sought-after nicotine buzz, so what's the real difference?
The key distinction lies in how each product is consumed.
Nicotine pouches are small, dissolvable pouches that are placed between the lip and gum. They work by slowly releasing nicotine into the bloodstream through the mucous membranes in the mouth. A major draw of nicotine pouches is that they are considered a smokeless product. This may contribute to their growing popularity as research shows that sales of nicotine pouches in the United States skyrocketed from 126.06 million units in 2019 to 808.14 million units by 2022, according to a study by Majmundar et al. (2022).

In contrast, vaping involves drawing vapor directly into the lungs. Vapers have several inhalation techniques at their disposal:
Regardless of the technique, vaping involves activating a device that heats e-juice into an inhalable vapor. Research shows that the percentage of adults who used electronic cigarettes increased from 4.5% in 2019 to 6.5% in 2023 (Vahratian et al., 2025).
For nicotine pouches the strengths start at 2-4mg on the lighter end. As people become more acquainted with the product, many users opt for stronger doses in the 5-8mg range. Repeat users tend to have a higher tolerance, and as a result use higher concentrations of nicotine ranging from 8-15+mg. Some companies sell more than 15mg, but should only be taken by veteran users.
As for those that vape, the ranges of nicotine level strengths are akin to that of a nicotine pouch. On the lower end 0-3mg is good for beginners, while 6-12mg is perfect for light smokers. 12-18mg is ideal for daily smokers, and anything 18+ is for experienced vape smokers only.
And if you’re going to smoke, you’ll be faced with the choice of either salts or freebase e-juices to use.
It’s important to understand that salts are an altered version of freebase e-juices. Nicotine salts produce a smooth taste, light throat hit, and quick absorption rate into the bloodstream. Whereas, freebase is harsher on the throat, and is congruent with large clouds and slow absorption into the bloodstream.
Consequently nicotine salts are ideal for vape pod systems and low wattage. However, freebase e-juices are typically used with high wattage sub-ohm kits.
Knowing the difference between the two can save you a lot of time and money when hitting up the smoke shop. While some pod systems are chill to use for nicotine salts and freebase e-juices, it is always necessary to check the coil or pod that is being used in the device. The more resistant a product is like 1.0ohm or higher the more likely it is that nicotine salts will be best paired with the product.
In short, both nicotine pouches and vapes provide a comparable experience to one another, but the choice really depends on the user’s intended experience. For a chill night at the movies, a nicotine pouch may be your best bet as it won’t be a distraction to others nearby. But if you’re in the mood to practice some cool vape tricks with your friends in the park, then bring along your trusty pen to blow some O’s.
